In this study, classification- and regression-based statistical downscaling is used to project the monthly monsoon streamflow over the Wainganga basin, India, using 40 global climate model (GCM) outputs and four representative concentration pathways (RCP) scenarios. Support vector machine (SVM) and relevance vector machine (RVM) are considered to perform downscaling. The RVM outperforms SVM and is used to simulate future projections of monsoon flows for different periods. In addition,...

Climate change impacts are affecting communities in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. However, only limited evidence exists about awareness level of local communities about climate change impacts. In this paper we investigate influence of environmental education programs, currently being implemented by different NGOs, on the level of awareness about climate change impacts among young people in two communities of the Limpopo province. We collect empirical data during two focus groups...

Providing a thermally comfortable environment is considered to be an essential requirement for effective learning in classrooms. Providing thermal comfort by using active but energy intensive environment control systems is not sustainable in a vast country like India. Though national building codes provide some specifications for classrooms, it is not known whether adherence to these standards ensures thermal comfort in a sustainable manner. This paper presents results obtained from a...

Information has a significant role in the growth of people and societies. Yet access to information is unequal across communities, particularly in rural areas in developing countries. Given this, people’s consciousness of climatic change differs by several factors including location and the type of medium employed. This paper examines community information centres as a vehicle for climate change awareness creation in Ghana. The paper adopted a quantitative approach with 205 participants...

Summary The exponential growth of scientific literature – which we call the ‘big literature’ phenomenon – has created great challenges in literature comprehension and synthesis. The traditional manual literature synthesis processes are often unable to take advantage of big literature due to human limitations in time and cognition, creating the need for new literature synthesis methods to address this challenge. In this paper, we discuss a highly useful literature synthesis approach,...

Abstract Climate change presents significant threats to human health, especially for low-income urban communities in the Global South. Despite numerous studies of heat stress, surprisingly little is known about the temperatures actually encountered by people in their homes, or the benefits of affordable adaptations. This paper examines indoor air temperature measurements gathered from 47 living rooms within eight low-income communities of Accra and Tamale, Ghana. Using multiple...
