Climate vulnerability represents a highly complex public policy challenge for government due to its interaction with diverse social, political, economic and ecological factors across scale. The policy challenge is further exacerbated when rural livelihood opportunities depend on multiple land use practices within shared social-ecological systems and adaptation actions related to one practice affects the others. In such cases, it becomes likely that national and regional-level adaptation...

Media and education undoubtedly play an important role in alerting and preparing people from many kinds of natural calamities and disasters. This is especially true for disasters that are caused by climate change. Through media and education people not only become more aware of the changes happening in nature, but are also empowered to minimise the risks associated with it. This chapter discusses several strategies in the domain of media and education to effectively tackle climate change...

This study uses an explanatory design to investigate the role of primary education in addressing climate change in primary schools in Fiji. A self-administered questionnaire (N = 30) was conducted with primary school teachers from 14 primary schools in Fiji. Using frequency analysis, all teachers perceived that addressing climate change at a much younger age is more effective than just addressing it at the decision-making level. Furthermore, a Kendall tau-b was performed, and identified a...

The environmental effects of climate change pose numerous issues to urban development located along coastal areas. New Zealand, an island nation surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, is facing great challenges caused by sea-level rise and more frequent extreme storm events. Therefore, planning resilient waterfronts that adapt to the changing climate is vital to the creation of sustainable urban development in New Zealand coastal cities. Although research on rising sea levels has led to several...

Comfortable indoor climate is anticipated in hot-humid tropical condition. University classrooms are such kind of space which quality can improve the occupant’s performance directly. Due to lack of their adaptation ability, like the fixed schedule of activities and clothing causes extra heat gain from the environment and make hazardous situation. In this research, we focused to find out the comfortable condition of university classrooms in Bangladesh. The field monitoring was conducted at...

Human individual differences widely and markedly affect thermal comfort and should be carefully considered in the design and operation of the built environment. This paper aims to list and examine the magnitude and significance of individual difference in the preferred/neutral/comfort temperature through reviewing previous climate chamber and field studies. Causal factors for individual differences are investigated, including sex, age and etc. There is no clear and consistent conclusions as...

Analyzing thermostat data together with outdoor weather to predict indoor temperature can help smart thermostats optimize the operation of a residential building's HVAC system and make buildings more comfortable. Using weather forecasts, these smart thermostats can become proactive in responding to actual and future outdoor conditions. Using the ecobee thermostat data from sixteen Canadian and US houses, the prediction accuracy of the generalized regression neural network (GRNN) algorithm...
